ADESO has been implementing interventions in Somalia for the last two decades in response to humanitarian crisis arising from drought and human conflict experiences in Sanaag and Juba regions. More recently ADESO has extended its interventions in Mudug and Gedo regions of Somalia. (SCORES in full) SCORES II was a twelve Month project funded by USAID-OFDA in the period April 2015 – March 2016. In implementing SCORES II ADESO adopted a community-driven relief for development approach to strengthen their social -economic resilience to support vulnerable groups affected by emergency crisis in Mudug and Sanaag regions. These interventions were aimed at improving access to food; protect livelihood assets, increased access to safe water and sanitation facilities, as well as promoting hygiene practices to build resilience among most affected households. The project built on the gains realized in the Livelihood and Emergency Assistance Project for Somalia (LEAPS) project, implemented by ADESO in 2012-2013, which provided food assistance as part of emergency response. Its multi-sector approach further linked emergency interventions to recovery strengthening recovery of livelihood and rehabilitation of communal water sources to address emergency needs and develop opportunities for community asset building.
SCORES II project was designed to link short-term responses to crises and focus on enhancing household capacity to address recurrent food security and sanitation needs. It was against this backdrop that ADESO initiated this project based on its objectives geared towards enhancing access to water, hygiene promotion, increased access to seeds and tools for the agro-pastoralists and improved solid waste, creation of temporary employment through cash for work as well restoration or livelihood through income generating activities in the project areas. The project targeted drought and conflict affected host communities and households through provision of farming, cash-for-work, income-generation cash grants, to improve immediate access of food to vulnerable target beneficiaries and WASH intervention to improve access to safe water and sanitation services for the target beneficiaries. The project included the following major components: provision of agricultural inputs, community based public health initiative and the strengthening of early warning systems supporting the Disaster Management Authority. These components complement each other allowing households to enhance their livelihood strategies while addressing key WASH problems.
